Yangon, the capital city of Myanmar, is surrounded with cultural and
landscape aesthetics, dotted with majestic golden pagodas, serene
emerald lakes and colorful markets. Yangon has earned the name of the
Garden City of the East with the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda dominating
the city skyline. Plated with more than 30 tons of gold and towering 98m
over the city, the tip of the pagoda is set with rubies, diamonds, sapphires
and topaz.
Old colonial buildings are frequent sites in the city with the City Hall
as one of the grandest. Two lakes, Kandawgyi, close to the city centre and
Inya, outside town, add to the pleasant atmosphere. Other places of interest
include National Museum, Zoological Garden, Wildlife Park in Hlawga and the
People's Park on Pyay Road.
